Tom, With all that's been in the news concerning this tragic war it's hard to understand what is truth and what is not; to comprehend the meaning for us to be involved and to lose our brave soldiers for a cause we can't neccessarily get a grasp on. After reading your story I have a whole new perspective on the war and I thank you for that. I currently have a great nephew serving in Iraq and we pray for his safe return. Thank you for sharing, you're amazing. God bless, Alice

Thomas, I am so saddened by the story of Abu Ali's death. You honor a man who made a great difference and sacrifice for his country. And a man who made a loyal commitment to our troops. Thank you for sharing this amazing story. And may he be remembered proudly by all who knew him and all who read this account of his last 4 years. You bring honor to him and his family.

Oh, and the point regarding a force for Humanity. Please refer to the wpr of 73. We as a nation, our blood and treasure, is not used as a force for humanity. Direct and vital national interest either responding to an attack, or preventing a imminent threat. Constitution 101. A force for humanity is nice, however, flys in the face of our constitution and history. If humanity is the new bar, ....we better start preparing to fight alot of new wars for humanity. Africa, Sudan, Darfur.Somalia, no end in sight, and have been going on for aloooooong time. War for humanity is a poor and illegitimate use of American power, wealth. lives, integrity, Sounds very nice, but, we as America, don't fight wars for some arbitrary definition of someones need for humanity. This is mounting out to be a civil war, with dubious sides and players, and we injected ourselves into the middle of it, along with our reputation and it's not going well.
I only hope the EU will speak alittle nicer about us, at least in private, for going over there and safeguarding their precious oil supply. I am sure they also have determined after this, that they no longer need to sustain an armed force at home. They just need to declare a " humanity crises" and the US will mount up and do the heavy lifting for them. If Iran, can make the case that the Jews are creating a humanity crises in Israel, BO may land the Marines there. LOL

As you can already see, 4-9-11, we have withdrawn, and allowed the EU to take the lead. We demanded OK leave, he ain\'t going. The rebels are questionable in motivation and will. The integrity of the US is on display and it\'s found wanting to our enemies. Khadafy, must now go. We will have to put boots on the ground to do it. US boots. We are now in a 3rd war against another Islamic nation and this time for EU oil. This will not go well for us, watch. This Pres. went against his own directives and the 1973 wars power resolution, to which he claimed Bush should have been impeached for. This was immature and impulsive, even after K. got 28.7 billion dollars of ours in fed. bail out funds in 2009-2010. 40 years, he has been able to survive. And BO picked a fight to look like a tough guy going into 2012. Bosnia should serve as a reminder, 10 years of bombing. God help, if a plane is shot down and a US serviceman is beheaded on national TV. K. was quiet for 20 years after RR killed his kids. Not a sound. Now if we dont kill him, Panam 103 in the future. Stupid, amateur move which will only put the jews in more peril.........Time will tell.

Rick,

This is a low risk, high potential operation for the administration... with the snow melting in Afghanistan and a litany of domestic political issues Obama is heading into a tough summer. Look at the positives if this is successful: Obama will have removed Gadhafi from power (something Reagan didn't do), with no loss of life to US forces (so far, and compare that with the cost of regime change in Iraq or even Afghanistan), the overall price tag will be in the neighborhood of $1-2 billion ($600 million so far, compared with the cost of the War on Terror which will wind up around a trillion). And when fighting intensifies in Afghanistan in the next few months Obama wants Americans to identify Libya as his war.

And the force for humanity is a legitimate aspect of this campaign. Not only does American involvement signal to the Middle East's dictators that a failure to reform could lead them to a similar fate as Gadhafi (continuing the advancement of change in the Middle East, which is what victory in the War on Terror looks like) but it is also Obama's exit strategy, which prevents the mission creep. By saving the rebels and beginning the military campaign Obama has immense leverage over his European allies, who rely on Libya's oil. He has forced NATO's hand by removing overt American action. Either the Europeans continue the military campaign, or find themselves with an embolden Gadhafi whom they will have to buy oil from; while simultaneously the murder of tens of thousands of Libyans will be broadcast over YouTube and Facebook. The governments of the UK, France and Italy would collapse in such a scenario.

I am all for this.

Some interesting irony there John... a handful of Americans advising a force of local fighters in order to effect regime change, sounds like a story I've heard before!
